What is
Pyrolysis?

Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition process where chemical bonds within the feedstock are broken down using heat. As energy is applied, the feedstock molecules disintegrate into stable fragments, resulting in the production of valuable energy products.

Our process operates through Fast Pyrolysis, where feedstock is rapidly heated in a controlled, oxygen-depleted environment. This method allows for the conversion of materials into three primary outputs: liquid bio-oil, solid biochar, and non-condensable gases.

​Key Features of the Progen Bio Plant

Dual Auger Design


Our Bio Plant features an advanced dual auger system, which creates two distinct pyrolysis zones within a single unit. This innovative design ensures optimal processing efficiency by maintaining a constant vacuum within the reactor. As vapor products are generated, they are swiftly removed from the reactor due to pressure differences, while solid residues like biochar and ash are expelled through a rotating airlock system.

Energy Efficiency


Although pyrolysis is an endothermic process (requiring heat), the majority of the energy input is utilized to raise the material's temperature. For instance, heating biomass from 25°C to 500°C requires approximately 1.08 MJ/kg, which constitutes over two-thirds of the total energy needed for the process. This efficient use of energy makes our system both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Rapid Cooling


The system is engineered for rapid gas cooling, with the total time from gas evolution to cooling being less than one second. This efficiency is crucial for maintaining the quality and yield of the bio-oil produced.

High Yield


The fast pyrolysis process can convert over 70% of the starting material mass into liquid bio-oil, while the remaining mass is divided between biochar and gases. This high yield of bio-oil makes it a valuable renewable fuel for generating heat and electrical power.​

Renewable Fuel Production


Bio-oil produced from our system can be used as an industrial fuel for generating heat and electricity. It can also be upgraded into transportation fuels and specialty chemicals, supporting a wide range of applications.

Soil Enhancement


Biochar, a byproduct of the pyrolysis process, serves as a solid fuel source and has emerged as an effective agricultural soil amendment. It improves soil health and fertility, contributing to sustainable farming practices.

Process Heat Recycling


Non-condensable gases generated during pyrolysis are typically recycled within the process to provide additional heat, further enhancing the efficiency of our system. These gases can also be used to fuel dual-fuel generators or gas-fired boilers.

Minimal Waste Pretreatment


Our technology requires minimal pretreatment of feedstocks, making it adaptable to various types of waste materials. This flexibility reduces processing costs and environmental impact.
